John Hunter Hospital

High-Performance Helipad Surface For John Hunter Hospital

Hospital helipads present a unique set of challenges. The surface must endure constant exposure to the elements, while also being resistant to chemical spills from aviation fuels and hydraulic fluids, and bear the significant weight and impact of helicopter landings.

For the John Hunter Hospital helipad project, the installation was expertly executed by contractor Sure Projects Australia. The project involved the installation of a specialised coating system across a 1600m2 area to ensure the highest levels of safety, durability and performance for critical emergency services.

To meet these demanding requirements, Flowcrete specified its advanced Deckshield ID 1.5 system. The installation process began with intensive substrate preparation, during which the entire area underwent mechanical concrete grinding. This crucial step removed existing contaminants and created a textured profile to ensure optimal adhesion.

Once the surface was prepared, the Deckshield ID 1.5 system was applied, creating a robust finish capable of handling the extreme stresses of helicopter traffic. To complete the project, Flowcrete’s high-visibility Deckshield UV Linemarker product was used to create the necessary safety markings and navigational aids.

Despite the challenge of unpredictable weather conditions causing delays, the project was successfully completed, delivering a high-performance helipad surface that meets stringent safety standards.
